Custom Metal Fabrication Built for Maui

Metal fabrication on Maui presents a challenge that doesn't exist in most other markets: the island's coastal environment is genuinely hostile to metal. Salt air, humidity, trade winds, and direct sun exposure accelerate corrosion, degrade coatings, and destroy metal installations that were designed for less demanding conditions. Most decorative metalwork specified and fabricated on the mainland simply isn't built for Maui.

Great General LLC fabricates custom metal installations specifically designed for Maui's coastal conditions. We select materials, finishes, and fabrication methods that account for the environment — stainless steel alloys, marine-grade aluminum, powder coat systems designed for salt-air exposure, and construction details that prevent moisture trapping. The result is metalwork that looks as good in ten years as it does on installation day.

We integrate metal fabrication within our broader general contracting and remodeling capabilities, which means we can handle the full scope of an architectural metal installation — foundation prep, structural attachment, the metal fabrication itself, and any surrounding construction work — as a single project without bringing in separate contractors.

Custom Metal Gates

A custom metal gate is often the first impression a property makes. Whether it's the entry gate to a Wailea estate, a driveway gate on a Haiku property, or a courtyard gate for a Kihei condo complex, the gate needs to perform structurally, function reliably, and look exactly right for the property's architecture and character.

Great General LLC designs and fabricates custom gates for residential and commercial properties across Maui. Our gate fabrication work includes:

  • Fully custom design — we work with you from initial concept through fabrication drawings to ensure the gate fits the property's aesthetic and your specific requirements
  • Material selection for Maui's environment — marine-grade aluminum, 316 stainless steel, and other corrosion-resistant alloys appropriate for your property's salt-air exposure level
  • Powder coat finishing systems designed for coastal environments, with UV-resistant topcoats
  • Swing gates, sliding gates, and pedestrian gates
  • Manual and automated gate systems, including integration with access control hardware
  • Post and column installation, including concrete foundation work for gate posts
  • Hardware selection — hinges, latches, locks, and automation hardware appropriate for coastal use

We've fabricated gates for luxury residential properties in Wailea, rural estates in Haiku and Makawao, and commercial properties throughout Central Maui. Every gate is built to the specific requirements of the property, not to a catalog spec.

Railing Systems

Railings on Maui serve both functional and aesthetic purposes — guardrails on decks and lanais must meet Hawaii building code load requirements, while architectural railings throughout a home contribute significantly to its overall design character. Getting both right requires understanding both structural requirements and design intent.

Our railing fabrication work covers:

  • Exterior deck and lanai railings — built to Hawaii State Building Code guardrail requirements (42-inch height for elevated decks, appropriate baluster spacing) in materials that withstand coastal conditions
  • Staircase railings — interior and exterior handrails and guardrails, both freestanding and wall-mounted, in configurations from simple and modern to architecturally detailed
  • Cable railing systems — horizontal cable infill with metal posts, providing open views while meeting code requirements; particularly popular on Maui lanais for their clean aesthetic and minimal visual obstruction
  • Glass panel railings — metal post-and-rail systems with tempered glass infill panels, requiring precise fabrication and coordination with glass suppliers
  • Interior architectural railings — feature railings on interior staircases, mezzanine edges, and open upper floors, often serving as the visual centerpiece of a room
  • Commercial railings — ADA-compliant handrails and guardrails for commercial properties and multi-family buildings

Material options for railing systems on Maui depend on the specific exposure level of the installation. Oceanfront and beachfront properties require more aggressive corrosion-resistance — typically 316L stainless or marine-grade aluminum. Interior-facing or more sheltered exterior installations may be suited to powder-coated mild steel with appropriate sealing systems. We advise clients on the right material for their specific situation.

Fencing Systems

Fencing on Maui serves multiple purposes: security, property delineation, privacy screening, wind management, and aesthetic integration with the landscape and architecture. Metal fencing in particular offers longevity advantages over wood in Hawaii's environment, where untreated wood degrades rapidly and painted wood requires constant maintenance.

We fabricate and install custom metal fencing systems including:

  • Decorative metal fence panels — custom designs in steel or aluminum, powder-coated in any color
  • Privacy fencing with metal framing and infill panels (metal slats, corrugated metal, or solid panel)
  • Security fencing for commercial and residential properties
  • Pool fencing meeting Hawaii code requirements for pool barrier compliance
  • Agricultural and ranch fencing for Upcountry Maui properties
  • Metal post installation with concrete footings, designed for Maui County soil conditions and wind load requirements

Architectural Metal Installations

Beyond gates, railings, and fencing, we fabricate custom architectural metalwork that becomes part of a property's design vocabulary. This includes:

  • Canopies and shade structures — metal-framed shade canopies for outdoor living areas, carports, and commercial entrances
  • Steel structural elements — exposed steel beams, columns, and connection details as architectural features
  • Metal cladding and screens — perforated metal screens, laser-cut decorative panels, and metal wall cladding for both interior and exterior applications
  • Custom hardware and built-ins — metal shelving systems, custom brackets, hardware for doors and windows, and other functional metal components
  • Exterior metal accents — address number plaques, mailbox enclosures, light fixture mounts, and other custom elements that tie a property's metalwork together

Material Selection for Maui's Coastal Environment

Not all metals perform equally in a coastal environment. Here's how we think about material selection for Maui projects:

  • 316L Stainless Steel — the highest standard for coastal corrosion resistance. The molybdenum content in 316L makes it resistant to chloride pitting, which is the primary failure mechanism for metal in salt-air environments. Appropriate for oceanfront and high-exposure installations.
  • Marine-Grade Aluminum (6061/6063) — naturally corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and strong. Excellent for railings, frames, and gates where weight is a consideration. Takes powder coat well.
  • Galvanized Steel with Powder Coat — hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coat creates a durable barrier for mild-steel elements in moderate-exposure locations. Not appropriate for direct oceanfront, but well-suited to properties more than a mile from the coast.
  • Cor-Ten (Weathering Steel) — forms a stable rust patina that protects the underlying metal. Can be appropriate for Upcountry Maui properties where the aesthetic is desired and salt-air exposure is lower.

We've learned from watching other contractors' work fail on Maui. Improper material selection is the most common reason metal installations look terrible after two or three years on the island. We won't spec mild steel in an oceanfront railing just to save money on material — it's a short-term saving that costs the client significantly more in the end.

Integration with Construction Projects

One of the advantages of working with Great General LLC for metal fabrication is that we're also a licensed general contractor. Metal installations on a construction or remodeling project often require coordination with other trades: concrete work for post footings, structural attachment to walls or decks, electrical for automated gates, and finish work around metal installations. We handle all of that coordination internally, rather than requiring clients to manage multiple separate contractors.
